On the day I visited, a Steinway & Sons piano was being installed, and soon there will be live music and other entertainment to go along with the suds. They’ll be self-distributing to bars around the city, but you can also swing by and taste them straight from the source-trust me, it’s worth the trip. Since opening its doors in Astoria in December, Singlecut has brewed 6 beers (with an uncommon and exciting emphasis on lagers), and expects to expand to 12-15 beers over the next year. Each of the beers is named to pay tribute to his favorite bands. The name SingleCut references a type of guitar, which Buceta used as the inspiration for the name and logo of the brewery to reflect his love of music and guitar playing. He didn’t leave his old skills behind though-he’s used his creative talents and advertising background to craft a brand as enticing as the beers. The latter is the brainchild of Rich Buceta, an avid home brewer who decided it was time to leave his career in advertising and follow his passion of making quality beer. Now, there are three newcomers on the scene: Rockaway Brewing Co., Bridge and Tunnel Brewery, and SingleCut Beersmiths.

Turns out the borough has its own suds history dating back to before Prohibition, but there hasn’t been a functional brewery in Queens since then. But in 2013, one thing is clear: Queens got next. Brooklyn has been the poster child of New York City’s craft-beer revolution, with Brooklyn Brewery, Sixpoint, and Kelso all making great beer out of Kings County.
